We’ve entered the last days of summer and to those of us in the South—it’s also the hottest part of the year. We tend to choose afternoons inside the air conditioning over venturing into the heat and humidity outside the comfort of our homes. And with more time inside, I tend to find myself in front of my computer for longer periods of writing time than I did a few months back. Whether you’re currently working on a writing project or not, I always find writing prompts a fun little escape from my regular work. These prompts can inspire you if you’re feeling a little low on creativity, can help zap a bad case of writer’s block, or just help you create a continuous habit of writing.

August Writing Prompts

If you like to write with pen and paper, grab some now. If you’re reading this on your computer, open up a new Word document, and let these prompts take you somewhere fun!

  1. Think back on summers past and write about a summer memory that changed your life (for better or worse).
  2. Write a scene in which someone finds a mysterious object at the beach.
  3. Write a story where the weather suddenly shifts from summer to fall.
  4. Let yourself imagine a world where people can communicate with animals. Then write about a day in the life you’d have as an animal translator.
  5. Your main character receives a letter from their future self. What does it say?
  6. Describe a festival that only occurs once every 15 years. What makes it special?
  7. Write a scene that takes place in an old, abandoned amusement park.
  8. Your character wakes up with a superpower, but it only works at night. What is the superpower, and how does your character use it?
  9. Write a story set in a city where it never stops raining.
  10. Reflect on the end of summer. What have you or your character learned or experienced?

TL; DR

Use writing prompts as a fun and challenging way to enhance your writing skills and explore new ideas. The goal with prompts is not to produce a polished piece but to experiment and enjoy the process of writing simply for fun.
